Tony Takitani returns to Amsterdam

Zen

After a sold out screening at the Dejima Japanese Film Festival filmtheater Rialto offers a one time opportunity for fans of intimate Japanese drama to see the movie Tony Takitani. On saturday November 5th at 15:30 the film will be screened for the second time in the Netherlands. The story revolves around a man who is burdened with an enormous inheritence of clothes. Tony Takitani can be seen as a contemporary version of the work of Yasujiro OZU, where little events get deep under the skin, while the music pleasently covers the literary realism with a blanket of mysticism.

21st Amsterdam Fantastic Film Festival

Zen

Films that are nervewrecking, films that astound and astonish – heaps of them will be shown during the 21st Amsterdam Fantastic Film Festival, from June 8 through June 15. In the main programme of the AFFF the whole range of the genrefilm, as is custom at the AFFF, can be seen on screen: fantasy, horror, sciencefiction, thriller, anime, and cult. From blockbuster to arthousefilm. From Dutch fabrication to films from far and away. Also, the European fantastic short film is being celebrated and during the Night of Terror you can count on oldfashioned goosebumps.

Special attention this year for the American stop-motionpioneer Ray Harryhausen and the Spanish actor, scenarist and director Jacinto Molina a.k.a. Paul Naschy. The first will also share his knowledge in a masterclass. In the themeprogramme How Far Can Too Far Go a special tribute will be paid to those genrefilms that were infamous for their content. Apart from a wideranged filmprogramme, specialists from Holland and beyond will discuss genrefilms that broke taboos in their day. The AFFF for Kids, that has the theme animation, will have special activities in Jeugtheater de Krakeling, aside its own filmprogramma, including Madagascar.

21st Amsterdam Fantastic Filmfestival. June 8 through 15 2005 in Filmmuseum Cinerama, Marnixstraat 400; Melkweg Cinema, Lijnbaansgracht 234A. For more information: info@afff.nl or visit www.afff.nl.

The entire program released

The Festival starts with Blood and Bones, a rousing and epic drama about a frustrated Korean immigrant. The modest Tony Takitani, a contemporary sober drama reminiscent of Yasujiro OZU, follows the life of technical designer Tony who is abandoned by his wife. Absurd horror can be found in the dynamically shot The Bottled Fools, where an elevator functions as the ideal location for explicit slaughter. Social issues are dealt with in the omnibus Jyukai – The Sea of Trees Behind Mt. Fuji, with a truly existing notorious forest is the locale for numerous suicides. L’Amant is an unpretentious manga adaptation about a young schoolgirl who engages in a collective one-year love relationship with three older men. The abstract instant cult-hit Tsuburo is an intense emotional experience that can be described as a post-industrial nightmare. In The Taste of Tea an eccentric family produces a springtime feeling with flighty dry humour. Finally it’s up to Kamikaze Girls to put the entire Japanese pop culture under a brightly coloured magnifying glass.

The Taste of Tea closing film

On saturday 28 may The Taste of Tea (Cha no Aji) of Katsuhito ISHII closes the first Dejima Japanese Film Festival.

With Shark Skin Man and Peach Hip Girl director ISHII could be compared to the likes of Takashi MIIKE. This time around he manages a more subtle and calm approach. Star actor Tadanobu ASANO spearheads a family of odd characters whose daily cares constitute small stories on their own.

This series of fresh and original ideas creates such an interesting universe that the domination of only one storyline becomes entirely redundant. The Taste of Tea shows a world akin to Amélie, familiar, but somehow too strange and beautiful to be real.

Blood and Bones opens Dejima Japanese Film Festival

Takeshi Kitano

The Dejima Japanese Film Festival is proud to present Blood and Bones (Chi to Hone) as it's openingmovie on Friday the 27th of May.

Director Yoichi SAI waited six years until actor Takeshi KITANO was available to play the lead part in this epic movie. It’s worth the wait because it’s hard to imagine someone else playing the alcoholic and frustrated character. KITANO plays one of the first Koreans who full of dreams takes the change to go to Japan. Almost immediately he loses himself in a world that’s not a thing like he expected.

Director SAI produces, after a few light movies, a tough and engaging drama which spans several decades, based on the Korean bestseller Chi to Hone by Sogiru YAN. After a very successful run at major Asian film festivals the movie is about to conquer Europe.

Pre-sale for Blood and Bones and the other movies starts on the 12th of May at Bioscoop Het Ketelhuis.
