On saturday 28 may The Taste of Tea of Katsuhito ISHII closes the first Dejima Japanese Film Festival. With Shark Skin Man and Peach Hip Girl director ISHII could be compared to the likes of Takashi MIIKE. This time around he manages a more subtle and calm approach. Star actor Tadanobu ASANO spearheads a family of odd characters whose daily cares constitute small stories on their own.
This series of fresh and original ideas creates such an interesting universe that the domination of only one storyline becomes entirely redundant. The Taste of Tea shows a world akin to Amélie, familiar, but somehow too strange and beautiful to be real.
